If you see the message "Unable to initialize" when opening Brandtrack Player on Windows, the app's local settings file (shared_preferences) may be damaged. Deleting it is safe: the app creates a new one when it opens.
Applies to: Windows 10 and 11. Estimated time: 2 minutes.
When to use this article
When Brandtrack Player shows this screen on startup:
Unable to initialize
The application could not be initialized. Please check your connection and try again.
Why does this happen?
The app stores its local settings in the shared_preferences file. If the PC shuts down suddenly while the app is saving it, for example during a blackout or power cut, the file can get damaged and the app can no longer start.
Even though the message asks you to check your connection, this problem has nothing to do with the internet, the network or your antivirus.
Step by step
- Close Brandtrack Player. Close it like any other Windows application.
-
Open the app's folder. Press Windows + R, type
%appdata%and press Enter. Find and open the Brandtrack folder, then Brandtrack Player. -
Delete the
shared_preferencesfile. It may appear asshared_preferences.json. Right-click it and choose Delete. If Windows asks for admin permission, accept. - Open the app again. Start Brandtrack Player as usual. It should work correctly.
If you can't find the folder in step 2, or it doesn't have the file: the app may be installed for the whole computer. Press Windows + R, type %programdata%, press Enter and open the BrandtrackPlayer folder. Then continue with step 3.
